Q: Tell us a bit about yourself and your career path so far.
A: When the due date for the birth of my baby girl arrived and passed, my uncle lovingly said, "she's just like her mama, marching to the beat of her own drum." It's true. I've always been a creative, passionate entrepreneur at heart. And entrepreneurs are leaders. Servant leaders. However, it took me a long time to to understand this about myself. As a result I struggled during the first half of my life trying to find my place in "9-5" careers. After college with a B.A. in International Relations from U.C. Davis, I began in a congressional office working on Capitol Hill with then U.S. Congressman Leon Panetta and later with U.S. Congressman Jay Kim, then went on to fundraising for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. I went on to earn my M.Ed. in Religious Education at Boston College and led spiritual retreats while also working as co-host of the national TV program "Word in the World" which aired on the Trinity Broadcast Network (TBN) and the Armed Services Network in over 100 million homes around the world.
Despite two college degrees, and everything going for me, I felt a deep sense that I was missing my calling and not fulfilling my true potential as I struggled through financial hardship. There were times when those closest to me couldn't understand my perspective or decisions. I felt alone in a crowd and experienced more than a few dark nights of self-doubt, confusion, frustration and fear. By nature, I'm a very positive person with deep faith. I couldn't understand my painful struggles around money and wrestled with this great divide between practical matters and following my heart to make a difference.
Q: What inspired you to become an entrepreneur?
A: When I became a Mom. When my daughter was born, I felt deeply committed to raising her as a "money-smart" girl. My love for my daughter fueled the courage in me to follow my heart into entrepreneurship, dive into the waters of financial literacy and learn all I could about building wealth.
Q: Tell us about your business.
A: As author of Amazon's #1 International bestselling book MONEYWINGS™, I've gathered the best from my experience and training as a Certified Money Coach, Brain Personality Connection Specialist and Spiritual Director, with a dash of "feminine magic" to help creative, passionate, entrepreneurial women unfold their financial potential one brave feather at a time through my 1-Day private 1 x 1 retreats, coaching packages, speaking events and podcast.
Q: What have been the biggest challenges of being an entrepreneur?
A: As a strong, sometimes stubborn, independent woman, I was never comfortable reaching out for help. It always seemed easier to grind my way through challenges. I didn't realize that this limiting mindset actually made life much harder, not easier at all. Starting my own business required me to shift into a new mindset that was unfamiliar and therefore uncomfortable, but key for my success. I learned it's not only okay to reach out for support, but a team is essential for the big dreams, the big results, the big love I wish to pour into the world -- whether I own a business or not. Plus, it's way more fun... and fun is allowed ;)
Q: Where have you found the support you've needed to start, grow, and scale?
A: With the help of our local women's business center, I completed an entrepreneurial training program that helped me start my business. From there, I earned my certification as a Money Coach from the Money Coaching Institute and my certification as a Brain Personality Specialist from Your Best Mind. I've found great support on this journey learning inside these programs. I've also received tremendous support working with my own private Money Coach, as well as investing in online programs led by highly successful female entrepreneurs, innovators, business and financial leaders where I also benefit being part of their beautiful community of fellow female entrepreneurs.
